Acid etching is the single most important step in refinishing porcelain to achieve a long lasting bond. Etch creates tiny pores in the surface that helps bond the primers to the topcoat. Acrylic or fiberglass tubs are easy to etch by sanding, but porcelain or enamel tubs require a different process of abrading. By sanding or abrading the surface, the refinishing coating will more strongly adhere. We use 10% hydrofluoric acid, or HF acid, for our acid etching. As trained professionals, we can assure you this acid is not harmful provided you use proper ventilation, gloves, and masking. Fox Valley is careful to protect drains and overflow parts. Once the acid has appropriately abraded the unit, it is neutralized, diluted, and flushed away. Fox Valley is careful to use eco-friendly products, and HF acid is included in that commitment. Acid etching will not harm your plumbing.

Acid etching is sometimes given a bad name, and leading franchises will refuse to use it because of its specific storage requirements and extra expenses. Fox Valley utilizes acid etching because we know it will create the best, most long-lasting finish for our customers.
Triple Adhesion System
Fox Valley is the only refinishing company with the Triple Adhesion System. Combined with acid etching, we use silane and epoxy to create the best available primer system in the industry. After acid etching, we apply silane. Silane is an adhesion promoter so strong that it is also used by NASA, ocean liners, and the commercial aircraft industry. Applied directly to the fixture, it provides a secure chemical bond. The last part of the Triple Adhesion System is the epoxy coating. This is designed as a high build, high tack intercoat adhesion primer excellent for difficult-to-coat substrates. Epoxy has high build properties and is ideal for form-filling minor defects in the surface. Using the three steps of acid etch, silane, and epoxy, we create the strongest possible bond and a beautiful, smooth finish.
